| Step 1 Increase the Yellow Light Timing |
Currently, the
Yellow's are set to 4 seconds, Increasing to 5.5 seconds gives
better "decision time" for drivers AND reduces accidents by 36% or
more. |
| Step 2 Change the current half-second "All Red Interval" to a 2-second "All Red Interval" |
For all intents and
purposes, an ARI is non-existent in Las Cruces. Increasing
it forces lead-footed cross traffic drivers to wait. Remember, T-bone crashes involve 2 cars, not just the RLR (Red Light Runner). |
I say it belongs in the hands of Traffic Engineers, but
will it ever happen? Probably not,
since the Public Works Dept gets a
piece of the Revenue. I mean really, wouldn't you look
the other way if YOU were gettting a nice chunk of Money for
doing nothing?
